Our Story

WCBOO’s story began in August 2014 in the New York Metropolitan area when a group of like minded educators and women’s basketball officials acknowledged there was a need for education in women’s collegiate basketball rules and mechanics. Founders Kerry Donohue and Jim Grillo formed the Metropolitan Approved Girls Basketball Officials, known as MAGBO. MAGBO embraced online learning by using online video and Google Classroom, hosting “In Position” officials camp, and teaching courses such as “Basketball Officials Basics” and “Basketball Officials Proficiency Course”. During the pandemic, MAGBO launched an online clinic with guest speakers from NCAA Women’s Basketball and IAABO.

In July 2019, Kerry and Jim met Felix Addeo and Donnie Eppley at the NASO Summit. Discussions ensued to determine if MAGBO and IAABO could connect. In the fall of 2020, IAABO granted a charter to a national women’s collegiate officials’ board (the first of its kind) and MAGBO became Women's Collegiate Basketball Officials Organization. WCBOO’s Education Team hosts an online “In Season Series” where play clips are viewed and discussed. Additionally, the team is developing a “Master Class” for officials seeking advanced instruction. Two cohorts of officials have completed our “WCBOO U” rules course and are beginning their journey as women’s collegiate basketball officials. Check back often to follow WCBOO’s growth as a dynamic resource for women’s collegiate basketball officials!
